Chalk Hill SEN School

We are pleased to confirm that we have recently submitted Chalk Hill SEN School for a detailed planning application which involves the expansion of the current site to include teaching and residential accommodation for the additional pupil intake. The project is part of a CIF bid with the Department for Education.

Chalk Hill SEN School is set to become a co-educational institution accommodating pupils aged 8-14, with particular provision for those who have been permanently excluded or are at risk of exclusion from mainstream schools.

Our design response to this unique site is to create two curved blocks that intentionally face south, bringing natural daylight, ventilation, and nature into the teaching and residential spaces. The area between the two blocks will feature a high-quality landscaped courtyard, enabling outdoor learning, quiet study, and contemplative spaces within the school. This deliberate integration with nature aims to provide a peaceful and calming environment, supporting students who may be facing personal challenges or difficult situations at home.

The playground has been relocated to a larger multi-use games area within the school playing field, accommodating the increase in pupil numbers.

The new accommodation consists of:

- Three primary years classrooms with support group and 1:1 study areas
- Five secondary classrooms with support group and 1:1 areas
- A 180m² school hall
- Administrative areas
- Specialist spaces for science, DT, and food technology
- SEN spaces for sensory, multi-sensory, and soft play
- Kitchen, servery, and admin spaces
- Storage areas
- Lift
- Staff and administrative areas
- Residential bedrooms
- Bathrooms and WCs

This thoughtfully designed environment ensures that every pupil, regardless of their background, has access to a nurturing and inspiring learning space. By integrating natural elements into the design, we aim to create a serene and supportive atmosphere that promotes well-being and personal growth.
