Bishop Stopford science, art and humanities block

State-of-the-art science laboratories

The new 4 storey extension evolved, following an initial masterplan study of the existing campus. Funding was secured by a successful CIF bid, to create essential new, inter-connected art, English and science departments.

A previously disused service yard within the site was identified as being appropriate for the addition of two state-of-the-art science laboratories and prep rooms; tutorial and classroom spaces and an all glass, open plan Art Department. In addition, a sculpture garden is incorporated within the landscaping scheme, leading directly from the art department to provide a creative, outdoor gallery for students to display their work. The overall design incorporates multi-coloured, glazed vertical and horizontal shading to limit glare to the teaching spaces. There are flexible, mobile fume cupboards in the science laboratories and a dedicated outdoor spray booth in the art department.
