Chalk Hill: Transforming an Existing School into an Inclusive Learning Environment

At Grayling Thomas Architects, we specialise in designing award-winning Special Educational Needs (SEN) schools across the UK. Our latest project, Chalk Hill, showcases how we can reimagine and repurpose existing spaces to create exceptional learning environments for every student.

From Middle School to Inclusive Education Hub

The brief was to transform an existing Middle School into a new Primary and Secondary facility that would serve a diverse community, including pupils with special educational needs, while fostering academic, social, and emotional growth.

Our design vision was simple: create a caring, supportive, and inspiring environment where every child can thrive.

Key Features of the Design

Integrated landscaped sensory courtyards for outdoor learning and calm retreat.
One-to-one and small group breakout rooms connected to classrooms, supporting personalised learning.
Specialist teaching spaces for science, art, design technology, and food technology.
Dedicated sensory and multi-sensory rooms within the main building fabric.
Enhanced staff facilities, including social and administrative areas.
Accessible WC and changing amenities, ensuring dignity and independence.
Boarding accommodation with 12 en-suite student bedrooms and 4 en-suite staff bedrooms, plus shared lounge, dining, and kitchen facilities, fostering life skills and community.

Creating a Supportive Residential Experience

Boarding spaces operate Monday to Thursday, offering students who live further afield the opportunity to stay in a safe, homely setting. The accommodation connects directly to landscaped courtyards, blending indoor and outdoor spaces for wellbeing and connection.
