Submerged Cotswold House
Chipping Norton, Oxfordshire

Grayling Thomas Architects embraced the challenge of designing a single dwelling on a severely restricted, sloping site overlooked by residential properties. The innovative solution is a partially submerged, split-level home that harmonizes privacy and functionality.
The contemporary half of the building is embedded into the hillside, featuring two en-suite bedrooms, a family bathroom, and a hall. Its roof is grassed, serving as an open garden area, enhancing both aesthetics and sustainability. The second half of the house resembles a vernacular stone barn, accommodating an open-plan kitchen and dining area, with a living room above.
A landscaped outdoor courtyard links the two halves, bringing natural daylight into the home and creating a seamless connection between the interior spaces.
Key Features:
- Conservation Area and AONB: Sensitive design respecting the site's environmental and aesthetic requirements.
- Solar Shading Growing Wall: Enhances energy efficiency and adds greenery.
- Sedum Roofing: Sustainable, eco-friendly roofing solution.
- Gabion Retaining Walls: Provide structural stability and a rustic aesthetic.
