Grayling Thomas Architects have completed the design for converting a former helicopter hangar in Oxfordshire into a stunning family home for a private client. Planning approval was received in 2023, and we eagerly anticipate the project's progression on site.

In collaboration with Chadwick Town Planning, we navigated both the pre-application and detailed planning phases. Our design retains unique features of the original hangar, such as the hangar doors and external metal cladding, preserving the building's simple, industrial character.

New elements are seamlessly integrated into the conversion to enhance its functionality and aesthetics. These include inset balconies at roof level, double-height internal spaces, and retractable fins on the sides of the property to mitigate solar overheating. The new design will meet Passivhaus or equivalent standards, ensuring a low-carbon, energy-efficient building with minimal maintenance costs.
